Early Childhood Worker Payrise: $150 Per Week Cash Boost Coming for Workers

Thousands of early childhood workers in Australia are set to receive a substantial cash boost as part of a government initiative aimed at enhancing their wages.

This increase is not just a financial relief but a recognition of the essential role these educators play in shaping the future of children.

Overview of the Wage Increase

The Australian government has announced a 15% pay rise for early childhood workers, which will be implemented over two years.

This wage increase will begin in December 2024, with a 10% boost followed by an additional 5% increase in December 2025.

For many workers, this translates to an immediate $100 per week increase, escalating to $150 per week by late 2025 for those earning at the award rate.

Government Funding and Conditions

Early learning providers are now eligible to apply for government funding to support these wage increases. However, there are stipulations: providers must commit to keeping fee increases below 4.4% between August 8, 2024, and August 7, 2025.

This measure aims to ensure that families do not face undue financial pressure while supporting fair wages for educators.

Statements from Officials

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the importance of fair compensation for early educators, stating:

“Parents want their children to be safe, happy and to have the very best start in life. This funding is about fair pay for the people who make this possible.”

Education Minister Jason Clare also highlighted the critical nature of childcare in preparing children for school, asserting that:

“A pay rise for every early childhood educator is good for our workforce, good for families and good for our economy.”

Who Will Benefit?

The wage increase will affect over 200,000 individuals within Australia’s early childhood education and care workforce. Eligible workers include:

  • Early childhood teachers
  • Educators
  • Cooks
  • Coordinators
  • Room leaders
  • Support workers

To qualify for this wage increase, workers must be employed by a Child Care Subsidy approved Centre Based Day Care or Outside School Hours Care service that opts into the worker retention payment. They must also be covered by either the Children’s Services Award 2010 or the Education Services (Teachers) Award 2020.

Exclusions from Eligibility

It is important to note that Family Day Care and In Home Care providers will not qualify for this payment, nor will preschools or kindergartens.

Payment Timeline

The payments will commence on December 2, 2024, and will continue until November 30, 2026. The first regular payments are expected to be disbursed in January 2025.
