The New South Wales government has made available over $140 million in toll rebates for drivers, encouraging residents to take advantage of the existing support scheme. The initiative is part of a broader effort to assist with the rising cost of living.
Since the introduction of the $60 weekly toll cap a year ago, which allows motorists to claim back up to $340 each week for tolls exceeding that amount, many drivers have not yet utilized this benefit.
While approximately $75 million has been disbursed to drivers through this program, there remains over $215 million available for claims, with around 276,000 claims filed to date. The average rebate returned to drivers stands at $277.
Roads Minister John Graham emphasized the importance of the toll cap as a vital financial relief for drivers, particularly those in regions with limited public transport options. He highlighted that many drivers rely on Sydney’s toll road network for commuting and daily activities, and the rebate is tailored to assist those in suburbs where toll expenses are a significant burden.
Notably, suburbs in Western Sydney, including Blacktown, Baulkham Hills, Auburn, Merrylands, and Marsden Park, have seen substantial claims, with some reaching seven figures. In addition, over 115 suburbs have average claims exceeding $300, including areas such as Parramatta and Lidcombe.
How to Claim Your Toll Rebate
NSW drivers who have incurred more than $60 in tolls in a week since January 1, 2024, can submit their claims through the Service NSW website. Claims are processed quarterly, and current claims are open for the period between January 1 and December 29, 2024.
The deadline for filing claims for 2024 toll spending is June 30, 2025. Following approval, rebates are typically processed and paid within 10 to 15 business days.
Customer Service and Digital Government Minister Jihad Dib stated that the rebates are designed to “put money back into people’s pockets at a time when they need it most.” The claiming process is straightforward, and assistance is available through Service NSW centres or by calling 13 77 88 for those who may need help.
Additionally, drivers can still claim a 40 percent rebate for tolls incurred during the 2023-24 financial year, but this scheme is being phased out in favor of the new $60 weekly cap.
Hence, it is advisable for motorists to submit their claims soon. For those who spent over $402 on tolls during this period, claims can be filed for up to $802, with the same deadline of June 30, 2025.
