Thousands of early childhood workers in Australia are set to receive a substantial cash boost as part of a government initiative aimed at enhancing their wages.

This wage increase will begin in December 2024, with a 10% boost followed by an additional 5% increase in December 2025.

For many workers, this translates to an immediate $100 per week increase, escalating to $150 per week by late 2025 for those earning at the award rate.

Government Funding and Conditions

Early learning providers are now eligible to apply for government funding to support these wage increases. However, there are stipulations: providers must commit to keeping fee increases below 4.4% between August 8, 2024, and August 7, 2025.

This measure aims to ensure that families do not face undue financial pressure while supporting fair wages for educators.

To qualify for this wage increase, workers must be employed by a Child Care Subsidy approved Centre Based Day Care or Outside School Hours Care service that opts into the worker retention payment. Exclusions from Eligibility

It is important to note that Family Day Care and In Home Care providers will not qualify for this payment, nor will preschools or kindergartens.

The payments will commence on December 2, 2024, and will continue until November 30, 2026. The first regular payments are expected to be disbursed in January 2025.
